Crops and Soils Events
Greetings Producers,
Wow! Record warm spring or late winter days have really changed the look outside. We have may fields where the alfalfa and wheat are up and growing. Many barn fans are running to cool the cows on those hot days. Before you get to the fields, it would be a good time to check the ventilation fans and check the belts and clean the dust off. All that dust reduces the amount of air the fans can move to keep the cows cool. Also read the article on the early planting dates for Wisconsin so your crop insurance is still in force.
I am working with a few farms that are holding a management meeting with the DATCP Grow Wisconsin program. Farmers can still receive up to $2,000 to reimburse consultants who provide diagnostic services to improve their operations. There is a limited amount of funds still available for this activity. If you are interested in this, please contact Zen at 832-5124.
Some of you have had a farm visit from me or the Rural Health Nurse, Karen Volkman, about the Rural Health Initiative. Click here for details about the Rural Health Initiative. Take some time and make an appointment to have Karen come to your farm to check your blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol. We have a lot going on and many of you need to check yourself out before planting season just as much as you check out your equipment before it goes to the field. The Rural Health Initiative is patterned after Shawano County’s program and is free of charge and will help us be involved in some preventative health care. We need to take care of ourselves as much as we do our cows and machinery.
Also a small farm conference is available at Sunnyside Elementary School in Sobieski. For those who have small acreages and a few animals, check out the listing of classes.
Best of luck this spring in planing and first crop harvest activities. Watch for PEAQ and Scissor clip results later in May.
Be safe. (ZM)
